GIS Raster formats: comparative benchmark

Sample: color-ortho [EPSILON - wavelet]

back to index

This page explores the RGB color-space and related compression algorithms:

SampleNotes
the EPSILON [wavelet] algorithm supports lossy compression.

EPSILON allows to select a variable compression ratio factor:
  • 1:1 - best quality, heavy size
  • 1:200 - worst quality, light size
color-epsilon-10 very good quality
quite identical to the original image

10% of the original size
EPSILON [wavelet] Ratio: 1:10
color-epsilon-15 good quality

7% of the original size
EPSILON [wavelet] Ratio: 1:15
color-epsilon-25 acceptable quality

4% of the original size
EPSILON [wavelet] Ratio: 1:25
color-epsilon-50 poor quality

2% of the original size

the image is noticeably blurred
EPSILON [wavelet] Ratio: 1:50
color-epsilon-100 very poor quality

1% of the original size

the image is severely blurred
EPSILON [wavelet] Ratio: 1:100
